What can you do with geoscience?

The answer might surprise you.

From renewable energy and water, to palaeontology, natural hazards, sustainability, data and critical raw materials, geoscience connects to some of the biggest questions facing our planet. But with so many different possibilities, it can be difficult to know where to start.

The Get into Geoscience Career Paths Portal is a new resource designed to help second level students (suggested for Transition Year and Leaving Certificate students) explore the wide range of careers connected to geoscience. We’re launching it today!

Explore careers, stories and pathways

The Career Paths Portal brings together three ways for students to start exploring their future in geoscience. Pathfinders, our career quiz, helps students explore careers that could match their interests and skills. A day in the life introduces students to real people working across different areas of geoscience and gives an insight into what their working lives are like. And Educational Pathways explores the different routes students can take into the field, from academic study and university courses to internships and other opportunities to gain experience.

The Career Paths Portal is designed to help students discover the different ways they could use their interests and skills in a geoscience career.

Do you enjoy being outdoors? Solving problems? Working with data? Understanding how the Earth has changed over time? Finding solutions to environmental challenges?

There is a geoscience career for you.

The portal introduces students to a range of different career areas and helps them explore what geoscientists actually do, the skills they use and the different pathways into the profession.

It’s also a chance to challenge some common ideas about geoscience. Geoscientists don't just study rocks. They work across science, technology, engineering, the environment and society to help us understand our planet and address real-world challenges.

A resource for students and teachers

The Career Paths Portal can be explored independently by students, or used as a starting point for classroom discussions about careers, subject choices and future pathways.

For teachers, it provides an accessible way to introduce students to the breadth of opportunities available through geoscience and to connect classroom learning with potential future careers.
