The Get into Geoscience Ireland Transition Year Programme
Encourage students to lead the way in solving real-world problems with the support of our geoscientists.
Our Transition Year science programme takes place over six sessions where students have the opportunity to pick a research topic and see it through from question to proposal, conducting their own research and presenting their findings.
Free to schools across Ireland, the programme is designed to get students thinking about how geoscience impacts their everyday lives and future.
How does the programme work?
Over six sessions, your students will be paired with a geoscientist from iCRAG to design and develop their very own research projects.
Each year, the programme takes on a new theme relevant to current global geoscience issues.
Our geoscientists will visit your school up to three times during the programme to support and advise the students on their research projects.
Students will then have the opportunity to enter their finished projects into a competition judged by industry experts for the Best Project and Best Learning Journey categories.
Finally, we invite you to visit our headquarters at University College Dublin for a day of talks and workshops, and we’ll cover your travel costs.
The Six Session Plan
Session 1: Learning
Students are introduced to the year's theme and given a full overview of the programme.
Session 2: Design
Students start to formulate their ideas with a design template to shape their project.
Sessions 3 & 4: Development
Students work closely with a geoscientist to develop their ideas and build their project.
Session 5: Construction
Students aim to complete their project by the end of this session in any way they choose.
Session 6: Delivery
Finally, students have the chance to deliver their findings and final project to their group.
